Are We at Risk?

Levees.org has created a searchable database that allows residents around the country to enter their zip codes and find out if they're at risk of flooding because of potential levee problems.

There are 146 levees across the nation that the Army Corps of Engineers listed as "vulnerable" in 2007 after inspections prompted by lessons learned in Hurricane Katrina. The database is based on a list containing 122 of those levees that the corps released to the public.

The list is of levees whose local sponsors -- state and local governments and levee districts -- were warned by the corps that they had to commit within a year to upgrading the levees or lose federal funding for any repairs that might occur if they breached.

The list does not include any levees in Louisiana. Levees along the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers were deemed acceptable and hurricane protection levees in New Orleans were already under repair or being upgraded as part of state and corps post-Katrina efforts. more
